B.Y.O.M. (bring your own mug)

Hi everyone! I bet that many of you are avid coffee or tea drinkers and what’s better than being able to have a nice hot beverage whenever you want!? Well, I have some shocking news for you: those ‘disposable’ cups and lids that are used almost everywhere are not recyclable. Many of us (myself included) figured hey, these go in the blue bin. Putting these cups in the recycling bin actually causes major problems and can contaminate the other items put into recycling.

“Several years ago, the city considered measures to reduce the number of coffee cups that made their way into the garbage. These included mandating that coffee chains provide full recyclable cups, or requiring that cup manufacturers take responsibility for recycling their products.

Coffee chains pushed back, and started their own in-store recycling programs.” (CBC News, 2016)

Wow… so instead of actually making recyclable cups, the coffee chains said, “Oh, we will just deal with it our own way.” Unfortunately, much of the waste created is still just ending up in landfills.

So now that we all feel terrible because we thought we were doing the right thing, here is the solution:

B.Y.O.M. Bring your own mug! As I mentioned in a previous post, most places support this and will even give you a discount off your order. The alternative is to ask for your drink to stay instead of to go and generally they will have a ceramic mug to put the drink in.

Here are a few of my favourite choices for reusable mugs.

  1. Stojo– a collapsible purse size cup which is super convenient if you don’t have a lot of space to carry a mug. Truly innovative, people are amazed by it every time I use it. ($15 for one, and offer discounted bundles) https://stojo.co/
  2. S’well– a little pricey but, they absolutely keep your beverage HOT for a ridiculously long time. Also, super trendy looking with a ton of choices for designs. (starting at USD $25 up to ~$45) https://www.swellbottle.com/
  3. Klean Kanteen– also my go-to for water bottles and cups but they also have awesome vacuum insulated options. (wide range of prices and sizes but starting at $12.47-$69.95 for a massive insulated growler) https://www.kleankanteen.com/collections/insulated-bottles/insulated
